Organizing Your Stash

Hello Members and friends and thank you for reading the blog today. Storing stamps and dies is always a challenge, and many of you have asked me how I store these items. I adopted some of the suggestions Jennifer McGuire made on her blog. To see her videos on organization, go to her blog and search organization.
For storing dies I use clear Memorex CD Keepers. These pockets will hold all but the longest borders and tallest dies. I cut a piece of white cardstock (4¾” x 4¾”) and print a label with the die name and manufacturer. I cut the original packaging (with the die’s picture) and slip it into the back of the envelope. When I have extra die cuts I store them in the pocket too. The CD Keepers are available at Office Depot in a box of 50 for $7.99.
For taller and wider dies I have been using 5” x 8” pockets from Office Depot (see left) but I just learned that they are discontinued. UGH! I have an idea on how to make these pockets so stay tuned for more details.
I store clear stamp sets in Avery Elle’s Pockets which are available here at The Stamp Act for $10.29 for a package of 25. These pockets have a flap on the top which I tuck inside. I label the pocket with the manufacturer’s name and the stamp set name. I organize the pockets by major holiday (Christmas, Halloween, etc) or by manufacturer for “everyday” sets.
It took me a while to find a storage solution for cling stamp sets. One day I just stumbled onto BuyMediaSupply.com and found these CD Cases. They are 7½” x 5¼” x ½” and even though they were originally for storing CD’s, there is no hub inside. They do have little clips inside but you can easily break them off if you need to. I love these cases because they will store dozens of stamps on both sides of the case plus they have an clear acetate sleeve on the outside so you can store the stamp set picture from any original packaging. The cost depends on how many you buy (for 50 I paid 78 cents each). The company packaged my order very nicely and shipped for free (with a minimum purchase). Check it out!
Left -- Case outside with original packaging in sleeve
Above -- Case inside. Store cling or clear mount stamps on both sides of case.
Originally I stored these pockets, envlopes and cases in photo boxes. This worked well, but remember when you have a lot of dies together, all that steel gets heavy! So I designed a cabinet that would hold these particular sizes and shapes and had a friend build it for me.
The bottom 2 drawers are for storing dies.
The top 2 drawers are for storing stamps.
There are 2 drawers on the side for storing paper in hanging files or for storing large bulky items like tools.
I hope this system gives you some ideas. I would love to hear your storage ideas -- email them to me I will share them here in a future blog post.
